22 Things I’ve Learnt in 22 Years

1. Keep an Open Mind

There are no mistakes, only lessons learned. It’s okay to fail at something. It’s okay not to have answers to everything. It’s okay to be criticised for your own blindspots. Treat it as an experience that will aid in the betterment of yourself.

2. Be Thankful for the Little Things in Life

Stop comparing yourself to others and reset your reference point. You’re here today because of what you have. Be grateful that you have a roof over your head, access to basic needs, or even being alive. Focus on the smaller details in life, and you’ll find yourself counting blessings every second.

3. Live in the Moments

The history had been written, the future is a mystery, and the present is where you are. Worrying about the past or future does not change anything.

4. Try New Things

Pick up a new hobby. Go on a trip you’ve always wanted to. Talk to a stranger. Do something that absolutely scares you. Give yourself a new look. Meditate. Whatever it is, try things that add colours to your life’s journey.

5. Be Yourself

Never hide in a facade because it gets to a point where you’ll lose your identity. Live in authenticity and embrace your flaws. People who truly love you will accept you for who you are.

6. Take a Break from Social Media

I was able to allot that huge chunk of time spent browsing social media on things I like. I experienced lesser anxiety, spent more time with my loved ones, and found myself reflecting a lot more.

7. Be Alone for Awhile

Getting out of a long term relationship was painful. Nonetheless, I was able to rediscover the essence of who I am, reconnect with my old friends, and to learn what it means to be independent again.

8. Listen More

Be a backstage crew and shift the spotlight to others. It’s a wonderful experience to hear about people’s life stories as they take you on a ride. More importantly, you’ll also pick up life advice along the way.

9. Don’t Force Things

As cliche as it sounds, but if things are meant to be, it’ll always find its way back to you. If it doesn’t, things will eventually work out, and you shall take on a different path that is truly meant for you.

10. Take Chances

It’s better to regret the chances you take than regretting the chances you wish you had taken. As Grey puts it:

“Knowing is better than wondering, waking is better than sleeping and even the biggest failure, even the worst, beats the hell out of never trying.”

11. Exercise

Keep a routine out of it. Exercising helps to pump up your heart rate, keeps happy, and regulates your mental health. (I admit it was initially hard trying to stick to an exercise routine but if you want to learn how to ease into it, check out my article.)

12. Learn How to Say ‘No.’

Set personal boundaries and kindly turn down opportunities you’re not comfortable with. You’re not a people pleaser. Life’s too short to wait around or waste it away, do what makes you happy.

13. Quality over Quantity

I’ve had my fair share of experiences in friendships. There were times where I felt alone surrounded by a big group of friends. Yet, there were also times where I find myself to be the happiest among a small group of genuine people whom I could trust.

14. Be Kind to Others

Help an elderly cross the road. Be there for a friend or family member in need. Offer your time to volunteer and contribute to society. Compliment someone. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes. A little kindness goes a long way.

15. Reading is Fun

Books, blogs, news articles, literature pieces, magazines — I love them all. There’s nothing like reading something so captivating that you forget about your surroundings.

16. It’s Normal to Feel Lost

It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison when you see your friends achieving so much in life while you’re still figuring out where you’re headed. Everyone crosses the finish line at different paces. The only race you should engage in is the one with yourself — who you were yesterday versus today.

17. Surround Yourself Around People You Want to Become

I often spend time with people who are uplifting and delightful. Energy is contagious, and it makes all the difference.

18. Travel

It’s like going on a trip to my favourite rocket ship. Wandering through foreign lands made me realise that the world has so much to offer. From breathtaking landscapes to exotic cultures to flavourful cuisines — these are all experiences I would never trade for anything else in the world.

19. Declutter Your Room

Chug them into a box and keep them out of your sight. Keep only what you need and the little memoirs you want to remember.

20. Believe that You Can and You Will

Full stop.

21. Confidence is Key

Fake it till you make it. Whether it’s conducting a huge client presentation or anything that makes you scared to the shambles, keep a calm composure, and remind yourself how excited you are for this opportunity. When you defy your fears, you’ll emerge stronger.

22. Play Video Games

When life gives you lemons, make yourself a cup of lemonade and unwind with video games. After all, life is all about its simple pleasures.
